Saturday 21st April was the date, 10.30am was the time and Bretby was the location for the latest Redeemer’s Ramblers Ramble. I say 10.30 but it was at 10.45 that the group set off from the centre of Bretby village on the Green near St.Wystan’s Church. 11 people and 3 dogs were in attendance and all were dressed according to the weather forecast of predicted heavy showers interspersed with bouts of sunshine. The glorious weather of March is now but a distant memory! The route of the walk took us past Bretby Park Farm and the very impressive surroundings of Bretby Hall, through some rather large puddles (see photo) and towards Hoofies Wood. As is appropriate for a church walking group the route took us past Noah’s Ark, a small homestead set deep in the woods where we all trooped past 2 by 2……High visibility jackets were then adorned for the brief walk on the busy Hartshorne to Repton road. At times the road can be like Donington race track but today it was very quiet thankfully. We went back “off piste” through the farm near Bretby Mill and towards Watery Lane and then on a path uphill back towards Bretby village to complete the 3 mile walk. At this point there was a display of a preening creature strutting around displaying it’s beauty for all to see ( but that’s enough about me…) as there was a Peacock in one of the front gardens of a house in Bretby. 6 of the group headed to Bretby Nurseries Garden Centre for a well earned drink/cake/biscuit/jacket potato/etc. Thanks to Michael Eyrl for organising the route and May’s Redeemer’s Ramblers walk will take place on Saturday the 12th starting at 10.30am from Beehive Woodland Lakes http://www.beehivefarm-woodlandlakes.co.uk

The latest Redeemer’s Ramblers walk took place on Saturday 17th March with the starting point of Staunton Harold Garden Centre. After a week of worrying about an uncertain weather forecast the walk started in very pleasant sunshine and at the halfway stage the author had to apply suncream! 9 humans and 1 dog were present and we all set off at 10.30am for the 4 mile walk.

After walking past the impressive Hall & Church and between the equally impressive gates, a big decision had to be made-left or right. Left it was so the group headed uphill towards “Keith’s Clump”. We didn’t see Keith but his clump was pleasant enough which took us high above the lake and towards Dimminsdale Wood. Sadly the snowdrops were past their sell by date as we headed down the Estate drive and through the hamlet of Heath End past where the Saracen’s Head pub used to be. When I was a child I used to spend many a warm summers evening at the pub drinking a pint while my parents had orange juice (or was that the other way round…)

We headed back in the direction of the Garden Centre but just when you thought it was all over the walk then headed into the relatively new Lount Wood which was planted between 2001-2004. The surfaced path took us past a “Walnut Research Area” where I half expected to see boffins in white coats working away…The homeward leg took the group past Dog Kennel Farm (wonder what they do there) and back to the lake in front of the Church and for what is for many the highlight of a walk-The Tea Rooms!

April’s walk will take place on Saturday the 21st. Starting point at The Green in Bretby by the Church at 10.30am. Please keep looking on the website for further details.

Yours in Walking

ANNUAL PARISH SPONSORED WALK

The second annual Parish sponsored walk took place on Sunday 2nd October with the starting point the “Round” car park overlooking Staunton Harold reservoir accessed through the hamlet of Calke.
11 of us started the walk plus Toto the Yorkshire Terrier although one of us nearly didn’t finish! (more of that later). Fr.Tom and Kevin both had notes from their doctors excusing them from doing the walk so they acted as Support Crew. I was expecting them to provide a drink and a rub down with a cold sponge at the halfway point but this didn’t materialise…..
It was a shock to the system that a walk in October took place in almost 25 degree heat. Nobody was complaining though! I’ve always said that the only thing the British summer provides us with is more light so we can see the rain coming down.
To provide an extra challenge (and get sympathy from potential sponsors) I decided to walk to Calke and back home again from Woodville which turned a 3 mile walk into 13 miles. Everyone else took the far too easy option of driving there…..
Due to the unseasonably good weather and, I’m led to believe lots of free tickets, Calke Abbey was very busy. Thankfully not many knew of the car park so everyone managed to get a parking space and we all set off at 2.30pm.
The route would take us next to the worryingly low reservoir, uphill around the Deer Enclosure, through Serpentine wood weaving downhill to Mere Pond, uphill again to the Tea Rooms and then past the Church,Home Farm and the road back to the car park.
The walk was marred by a worrying incident at the top of the Deer park when Shirley was bitten on the right arm by a large dog. I find it amazing that irresponsible owners take a potentially dangerous dog on a walk in a very busy area on a Sunday afternoon. The consequences of it biting a child don’t bare thinking about. Many thanks to Mary for pouring water on the wound along with cold cucumber wipes to keep the swelling down. My own first aid kit needs updating as I had 2 out of date Aspirin, 1 tin of Vaseline and a set of Ear Plugs…….
Thankfully Shirley is making a full recovery after a Tetanus shot and Antibiotics. She has had a few side effects though-she is now partial to the occasional Bonio and the lawn is in quite a mess…..
After a well earned break at the tea rooms the group headed back to the car park to finish the walk. It was at this point I left the group and headed towards Southwood and the steep climb of Pisternhill and made my way back to Woodville.
Thank you to everybody who took part in the walk and thank you to all sponsors who gave generously to raise funds for both churches.
Redeemer’s Ramblers needs a few more walkers. Walking is free, fun and keeps you fit.

Yours in walking,

The hardy bunch of folk who call themselves Redeemer’s Ramblers have managed to do one walk each month through the winter months. From having to slap on the sunscreen for October’s sponsored walk the ramblers have braved typical winter weather for each of their walks.November’s walk started from Albert Village on a cold, misty day and while December’s walk that started from Breedon-on-the Hill took place in bright sunshine, the walkers had to look deep into their closets to find extra clothing as the thermometer barely got above zero.
January’s walk took place on New Year’s Day (the 1st for those who aren’t sure…) Starting at Moira Furnace the walker’s were faced with four seasons worth of weather in one afternoon and ended with a thorough soaking as the heavens opened.
February’s walk started from Albert Village again and it was that cold, I’m not sure if it was because my eyelids were freezing over but I could swear there was a Penguin waddling about at Reservoir Hill Lake……
With Spring on the horizon the Redeemer’s Ramblers would welcome more walkers to emerge from hibernation and join us. March’s walk will start from Staunton Harold on 17th March at 10.30am

Yours in Walking
